Biography

Daniel was a placid baby most of the time. He loved to be swaddled in blankets to sleep and hated going to supermarkets or in the car even when very young.

When he was around 18 months old I asked for Daniel to be referred to speech and language as he was not talking or showing any signs of babbling but was told he was just lazy and boys were lazier than girls.

Just before his 2nd birthday his nursery noticed he didn't give eye contact or play with other children and referred him to the senco and the child development team. From here he was put on the pathway and was diagnosed early 2009 with Autism.

Dan went from his mainstream nursery into a special school that was for children with moderate learning needs although he really struggled here as his autism and sensory needs are severe and he needed a more specialised setting to meet his needs. We fought to get him moved into his current school which is currently working for him.

Daniel is now 9 and attends a specialist school for children with complex needs in Knowsley. He is still non verbal and uses PECS to communicate. He needs routine and we use visual schedules for this. He has support from Pas to access activities out of school and loves swimming and he attends the local respite unit regularly where he can have sleep overs with his friends.

As well as Daniels autism and sensory issues he can also display some challenging behaviours. Being covered up with blankets helps Dan to be calm, he loves to sit with a book or his iPad and have a cover over him . I know he would love a personalised quilt from love quilts.
