Biography

Henry was a healthy happy baby until he was 10 months old when all of a sudden he became very ill very quickly, he turned blue had a very high tempreture and had a fit. I took him to the GP who sent us straight to hospital.
At hospital they did an xray and he had a chest infection so they sent us home. I was back the next day - something wasn't right. I insisted they carry out more tests and they took a urine sample Henry had a UTI. Unfortunatly less than a month later we were back again at the hospital with another UTI.

This time we were refered to a paediatrician who said we would monitor him. Unfortunately, Henry was then getting a UTI on average once a month, and in November 2013 he was so ill he was hospitalised and in for a few nights. Due to this he then had an ultrasound scan on his kidneys nothing showed up. A scan was arranged for January 2014, where they numbed his privates and stuck a probe up inside him to check his kidney finction. It was this scan that showed the problem bilateral VUR was finally diagnoised. We were then refered to John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford and assigned a consultant and put under consultant care.

When we met the consultant he explained what Henry had and what it would mean and that Henry would have to take medication everyday (it tastes and smells disgusting) and he would need his first op which is called a sting where they inject filler into his tubes to stop the urine refluxing back into his kidneys. Further tests were carried out and it was found Henrys left kidney had almost failed and his right kidney is only 64% effective so we need to keep an eye on his kidney function as he could go into renal failure due to scarring from the reflux due to his condition.

He had his op in April 2014. He's still on his meds and will be under consultant care until he is at least 18. He will probably need further operations as he grows and the problem will reoccur as the sting only lasts a few years. He is a happy little boy now who hugs his consultant when he sees him. Who knows what's next. He is back in November for another scan and appointment. Everytime he is ill he has to give a sample to be tested for a UTI...
