Biography

Isabella was born at full-term following a normal pregnancy. During birth she swallowed meconium and needed suctioning for 10 mins but no special care was needed. She was a very contented baby and loved having cuddles and being held.

When Isabella was 10 months she was rushed to hospital with bronchiolitis and testing positive for RSV she needed oxygen and high dependency. She spent 9 days in hospital (over her 1st Christmas) and a further 10 days admission 2 days after her 1st birthday for the same reason but this time needed airvo oxygen. Since then Isabella has had further admissions for similar problems.

By the time Isabella was 16 months she would only say 2-3 words and still wasn’t walking or attempting to walk. She was then diagnosed with neuro-developmental disorder and further tests were requested. Isabella finally started walking at 22 months and she was so proud of herself when she managed this. She has been through hours of 1:1 and group speech and language therapy sessions.

Isabella also had genetic testing carried out which came back normal but her paediatrician thought her delays and facial features could still be genetic and referred us to a geneticist. We went through Whole Exome Sequencing testing and in April 2020 got results that Isabella has a very rare genetic condition KCNT2.

Isabella is 5 years 8 months with significant learning needs, sensory processing disorder, speech, language and communication difficulties (single word user but mostly non-verbal) and sleep difficulties. Isabella is a very fun loving cheeky little girl. She has been through so much and has always got a big bright smile on her face no matter what she is going through.
