Biography

Sophie was diagnosed with Down Syndrome at birth but was fairly healthy at first. At only 5 months old she started having seizures which caused a developmental regression. At 18 months old she became acutely unwell and was transferred in an intensive care ambulance to Great Ormond Street Hospital. She spent 5 months there and in that time she had a respiratory arrest and had to be resuscitated. She also had a major operation to reconstruct her airway.

When she came home she had very complex care needs, several seizures a day and was fully tube fed. At 2 years old she was certified as blind due to the damage caused by the seizures to the nerve connecting the eyes to the brain. At 7 years old it was discovered she also had kidney disease and she currently has only 50% function in each of her kidneys. She is now catheterised 4 times a day too.

Sophie is now 12 and has been through so much and even in the last few months has been hospitalised with Strep A. She is unable to walk or talk but she is such an easy going and happy girl for someone who has been through so much and she just enjoys the small things she can from life.
