Biography

Grace is one of triplets. At 14wks into the pregnancy one of her sisters died. And at 14 wks and 2 days graces waters broke. Every week after that she lost more fluid. The doctors didn't think she would survive. Then at 26 weeks, spontaneously, Grace and her sister arrived. Fighting for every breath. They weighed 1lb 14oz each. They were immediately ventilated. And transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit an hour and a half drive from our home.

Over the coming weeks Grace picked up one infection after the other, she stopped breathing countless times, and needed lots of emergency procedures. At 8 weeks old she had an operation to give her a tracheostomy. This was her new airway. It was the only way she could breathe. She was on a ventilator which helped her.

After 4 and a half month the girls were ready for discharge from the neonatal unit. However Grace was not well enough to come home just yet. She spent another 4 and a half months in hospital. She had a couple more infections, and several episodes where she stopped breathing. She had to go to theatre lots of times and was still on a ventilator, she would need that to come home with. She spent her first Christmas in hospital. She was away from her older brother and her sister, and always looked forward to them visiting her.

She came home in April 2014. Since then she has had lots of admissions to hospital and lots of trips to theatre. She needs a full reconstruction of her airway which is a massive operation but hopefully will improve her airway so they remove the tracheostomy.
