BiographyBella was born with an antenatal diagnosis of DiGeorge Syndrome and congenital heart disease. Being diagnosed antenatally allowed hospital to prepare for her arrival and the days after birth. Bella was transferred to her specialist hospital, Birmingham Childrens, at 1 day old. She underwent the first of many open heart surgeries at 8 days old. Throughout Bella’s life so far she has spent more time in hospital than at home.
She has undergone many admissions for viral infections which wouldn’t have a huge effect on healthy children. For Bella, a viral infection requires treatment with respiratory support. In September 2022, at 7 months old, Bella was admitted to hospital until May 2023. She underwent many procedures, including her second open heart surgery and had 3 admissions to PICU.
Due to Bella spending so much time in hospital she has many delays with her physical development. At 2 years old she cannot stand or walk but she undergoes intense physio to help her get stronger. Her diet is very restricted, she can only eat 4 month stage puree and still relies on formula to help her gain weight. She cannot talk or communicate and is under SALT to help her develop her skills. She is under assessment for an EHCP so she will hopefully be able to start nursery next year with the support of a 1-1.
