Biography

Ophia was born a floppy, blue baby. However, she recovered quickly and was soon sent home to meet her big sister. Looking back I would say she was an easy baby because she slept a lot. Now though, I realise she was unwell and that was why she slept so much.

Ophia has laryngomalacia, and at seven months old she required two surgeries on her larynx. During her hospital stays other conditions were identified, including GORD, an unsafe swallow and low muscle tone. The list seemed to go on forever and we were constantly attending hospital appointments.

At seven months old Ophia became solely dependent on an NG tube. Trying to eat solids was causing chest infections and making her very unwell, often requiring hospital admissions. At two years old Ophia had a PEG tube placed and continued to be tube fed.

It wasn't until the age of seven that her swallow was considered safe enough to begin trying some oral foods again. Even now, at 11 years old, the majority of her nutrition still comes through tube feeding.

Ophia has now been diagnosed with autism and ADHD. She also experiences anxiety which can make everyday situations challenging at times. Alongside her ongoing medical needs these additional diagnoses have brought further challenges for both Ophia and our family. Despite everything she has faced throughout her life Ophia continues to show incredible strength and determination.
