Biography

Talena was born at 36 weeks. She had a cyst on her liver. An ultrasound was carried out when 3 days old and we were told everything's fine and they would review in 3 months time.

Over the weeks I always thought Talena looked slightly yellow but was told at her 6 week check she looked fine. At 9ish weeks old I noticed her eyes and gums had gone yellow along with her skin which you could clearly see was yellow and we were admitted on to our local ward to have lots of tests. However they came back to me saying they didn't know what was wrong - they knew it had to be her liver but needed to get a specialist hospital involved (Birmingham Children's Hospital). We were then allowed home on home leave while we waited to find out what was wrong.

I received a call the next morning to say I needed to come to Birmingham Children's so they could see why and what was causing her to be yellow. We were admitted on the 21st September 2023 to begin investigations and the next day we had a diagnosis of biliary atresia and were told she will need a Kasai procedure on Monday 25th September 2023 which was a 5 hour operation. We then had a 6 days recovery and allowed home on the 1st October 2023.

Following this Talena has countless admissions which included her being put on an ng feeding tube which she's now had for 2 years. She is due to get her peg very soon.

We don't know what Talena's future holds - we are on watch and wait and see when she will need a transplant but she is such a happy smiley girl.
