Biography

Jack was born full term and was perfectly healthy until he was 12 weeks old.He contacted a virus called Bronchiolitis and was admitted to hospital with breathing difficulties.Within hours of being there he went into respiratory arrest He was put on a ventilator to breathe for him and we were transferred 50 miles to our nearest paediatric ITU,where we were told he had bronchial pneumonia and they couldn't tell us whether he would survive the night. He was a little fighter and after a week was able to come off of the ventilator and breathe on his own.We were then transferred back to our local hospital and after a few weeks he was able to go home but the following few years he was in and out of hospital and on copious medications to help him breathe. At around a year old having older children already it became apparent to us that Jack was definitely not developing normally and we thought perhaps there was some brain damage from when he had the respiratory arrest .However the Paediatricians agreed something really wasn't as it should be and referred him for an assessment at our local hospitals child development centre. He was diagnosed with Autism and Learning disabilities at 2 years 8 months old. They placed his development at that time as that of a 3-6 month old.He was unable to talk or understand speech unable to feed himself, wouldn't interact with anyone including us and spent hours just sitting spinning things and would scream at everything. Everything seemed to terrify him and was awful to watch our beautiful boy so terrified of the world around him. At 3 we were able to get him a statement of special needs and in to a wonderful special school. They were amazing and he has come a long way with their help.He still struggles with many things in life and his autism and learning disabilities affect him significantly on a daily basis, but he is so wonderful! He has a beautiful smile, a fantastic mischievous laugh and has totally enriched all of our lives. We are very proud of our 'Jip Jack'!
